Red Coral (Moonga Stone)

Italian (Mediterranean) Red Coral: Harvested in the Mediterranean Sea (principally off Italy, including Sardinia, and off Tunisia), Corallium rubrum is celebrated for its uniform, warm carnation to deep oxblood red coloration without a white central core. Because Mediterranean coral grows in branch-like colonies and features a consistent organic calcium carbonate composition, it is ideal for cabochon cutting (capsule and triangular shapes) and traditional jewelry. Japanese Red Coral: Harvested from deeper Pacific waters, Japanese red coral (Corallium japonicum, often called Moro) displays an intense dark oxblood red hue but characteristically features an internal white vein or core running through the center of the branch. Natural red coral is an organic gemstone formed by marine coral polyps, making it distinct from mineral crystals and artificial imitations:

• Natural Grain & Growth Rings: Under 10x gemological magnification, genuine coral exhibits microscopic parallel longitudinal grooves and concentric growth rings similar to tree rings. Synthetic plastic, resin, and pressed glass imitations have smooth, bubble-filled, or vitreous textures without organic grain.
• Dyed Sea Bamboo & Sponge Coral: Inexpensive porous marine materials or white sea bamboo dyed red bleed color when touched with an acetone-soaked swab. Natural, undyed coral does not release colour.
• Thermal Feel: Genuine coral feels cool to the touch and warms slowly compared to plastic or resin counterfeits.

Every Red Coral at Ratna Gems is individually tested and comes with a report from an independent gem testing laboratory. The laboratory testing report identifies it as Natural Red Coral, confirms that the colour is natural, with no dye or chemical impregnation, and lists physical properties including specific gravity (approx. 2.65), refractive index (1.65 spot reading), and hardness (3.5 on Mohs scale). Each report carries its own report number, which you can quote to the laboratory to check it.

• Triangular Cabochon (Trikona Moonga): A distinct triangular cabochon cut with three soft corners and a domed surface, crafted from branch junctions. It is highly sought after by buyers following traditional custom.
