Zambian Emeralds: Mined mainly in the Kafubu area of Zambia’s Copperbelt (home of the Kagem mine), Zambian emeralds are known for a deep green to slightly bluish-green colour (the bluish tint comes from iron in the beryl) and often good transparency, which makes them popular for fine jewelry and traditional wear.

Brazilian (Sapota) Emeralds: Mined in regions such as Minas Gerais and Bahia, Brazilian emeralds typically display a bright, lively yellowish-green to medium grass-green tone. Popularly known in the Indian trade as Sapota Panna, they offer genuine, natural beryl with classic character at an accessible price per carat.

Colombian Emeralds: Historically famous for warm, pure emerald green tones coloured by chromium and vanadium. Colombian emeralds often have more internal fissures, and fine ones carry premium pricing.

Internal inclusions and microscopic fissures are natural hallmarks of genuine emeralds, poetically termed Jardin (French for “garden”). Because beryl crystals form in volatile hydrothermal environments under tectonic pressure, nearly every natural emerald contains internal fractures, liquid-gas two-phase inclusions, or mineral crystals. Natural inclusions help a gemologist tell a mined emerald from glass, but synthetic emeralds have inclusions of their own, so a laboratory test is what confirms natural origin. Eye-clean emeralds without fissures are extraordinarily rare and carry significant collector premiums.

No. We do not sell emeralds treated with artificial green dyes, colored oils, or polymer resins (such as Opticon). Our emeralds are unheated. Like almost all emeralds in the trade, they are lightly oiled with colourless oil to protect them; this traditional oiling is colourless and reversible, does not change the stone’s natural colour, and a laboratory may record it as minor oil. Every emerald in our collection comes with a report from an independent gem testing laboratory.

Every Emerald at Ratna Gems is individually tested and comes with a report from an independent gem testing laboratory. The laboratory testing certificate confirms the mineral species (Natural Beryl), gemstone variety (Natural Emerald), exact carat weight, refractive index (1.577–1.583), specific gravity (approx. 2.72), and clarity enhancement disclosure. Each report carries its own report number, which you can quote to the laboratory to check it.
