The Sanskrit word Navratna translates to “nine gems” (nava = nine, ratna = gem), representing the classical sacred nine-gem composite in Indian lapidary and cultural tradition:

• The 9 Canonical Stones: In traditional Vedic cosmology, each stone corresponds to one of the nine celestial bodies (Navagrahas): Ruby (Sun / Surya), Pearl (Moon / Chandra), Red Coral (Mars / Mangal), Emerald (Mercury / Budh), Yellow Sapphire (Jupiter / Brihaspati), Diamond (Venus / Shukra), Blue Sapphire (Saturn / Shani), Hessonite Garnet (Rahu), and Cat’s Eye (Ketu).
• Calibrated Sets: Our sets use small, uniformly calibrated round stones for jewelers and artisans crafting custom Navratna rings, pendants, armlets, and bracelets; the listing gives the exact size.

Here is exactly what is in our Navratna sets:

• Eight natural gemstones: Ruby, Blue Sapphire and Yellow Sapphire (corundum), Emerald (beryl), Hessonite (garnet), Cat’s Eye, Red Coral, and a cultured Pearl.
• The Diamond position: a natural diamond would add greatly to the cost, so our standard set uses a diamond substitute, and the product listing names it. “American Diamond” is the trade name for cubic zirconia, a lab-made material, and is not the same as natural white zircon. If you would like a natural, IGI-certified diamond, we can make a custom set on request.
• Treatment: each stone’s treatment status is stated on the set’s lab report.

Every Navratna gemstone set at Ratna Gems comes with a report from an independent gem testing laboratory. The report records:

• Each Stone’s Identity: The identity of each stone in the set (for example corundum, beryl, grossular garnet, coral and cultured pearl)
• Dimensions & Shape: Documents the calibrated millimeter diameter and uniform round cut
• Report Number: Each report carries its own report number, which you can quote to the laboratory to check it.

Because a Navratna piece combines minerals with widely contrasting physical properties—ranging from soft organic gems to hard corundum—care must always be tailored to the softest stones:

• Contrasting Hardness: While Ruby and Sapphires rate at Mohs 9.0, Pearl and Red Coral are organic calcium carbonate gems rating only 2.5 to 4.0 on the Mohs scale. They are porous, soft, and sensitive to heat and acids.
• Never Use Ultrasonic or Steam Cleaners: High-frequency ultrasonic vibrations, boiling water, and high-pressure steam can permanently crack, pit, or destroy Pearl and Red Coral. Always avoid machine cleaning for any multi-gem Navratna piece.
• Safe Cleaning Method: Clean gently using a soft microfiber cloth dipped in lukewarm water with a tiny drop of mild, pH-neutral soap. Wipe each gemstone surface gently, rinse with a clean damp cloth, and pat dry immediately. Store flat in a fabric-lined jewelry box away from abrasive contact with harder loose gems.

• Traditional Central Ruby Arrangement: In the traditional arrangement, Ruby (representing the Sun) sits at the center, with the other eight stones placed around it in a set order of directions.
• Universal Cultural Appeal: In Vedic astrological lore, Navratna is uniquely considered suitable for individuals across all horoscopes, as it traditionally symbolizes cosmic harmony among all nine planetary archetypes.
• Customary Metals & Wearing: Customarily set in 22K/18K Yellow Gold, Panchdhatu, or Sterling Silver (925 Silver) as a ring, circular pendant, or bracelet. When worn as a ring, traditional wearers often place it on the ring finger (Anamika) of the right hand.
