Obsidian is an extrusive igneous rock formed when felsic lava extruded from a volcano cools rapidly with minimal crystal growth. The resulting stone is an amorphous, smooth natural glass displaying an intensely deep, mirror-like jet-black surface luster.
Obsidian has a Mohs hardness of 5.0 to 5.5 and a conchoidal fracture pattern.
