Detailed Product Description

This Natural Australian Opal Stone (Doodhiya Patthar) weighs 3.94 carat (4.33 ratti) and measures 14.20 x 11.00 x 4.20 mm, a medium-domed oval cabochon. It shows a translucent body with a soft blue sheen across the dome and a honey-coloured rim; the photos show only a tiny flash of colour. Like every Ratna Gems stone, it is tested by an independent gem laboratory before dispatch, and its lab report is included free.

Opal, known in India as Doodhiya Patthar or Opal Ratna, is hydrated silica, a mineraloid rather than a crystalline mineral. Its play-of-colour comes from light diffracted by tiny, orderly silica spheres inside the stone, so no two opals show the same pattern. Australian origin, declared by Ratna Gems: Australian opal refers to opal from an Australian source; each stone's value depends on its own play-of-colour, body tone, cut, weight and treatment.

Appearance

The studio photos and the video show a translucent body with a soft blue sheen across the dome and a honey-coloured rim; the photos show only a tiny flash of colour. The colour moves and changes as the stone is tilted, so the video is the best guide to how it looks in hand.

Traditional Use

In traditional Indian Vedic astrology, opal (Doodhiya Patthar / Opal Ratna) is traditionally associated with Venus (Shukra) and is regarded as one of the traditional upratnas, or substitute gemstones, for Diamond (Heera). Customers buying opal for astrological wear usually follow the guidance of their own astrologer.

Care

Opal is softer than most gemstones (about 5.5 to 6.5 on the Mohs scale) and holds water. Clean it with lukewarm water, mild soap and a soft cloth, then dry it gently. Avoid ultrasonic and steam cleaners, boiling water, acids, perfume, strong detergents and hard knocks, and keep it out of hot cars and sunny windows: intense light, strong heat or very dry storage can cause crazing, a network of fine surface cracks.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is this opal lab tested?

Yes. Every Ratna Gems stone is tested by an independent gem laboratory before it is dispatched, and the lab report comes with the stone free of charge. The report card is also added to this page.

Is Doodhiya Patthar the same as opal?

Yes. Doodhiya Patthar and Opal Ratna are Indian names for opal, not a separate stone.

How is Australian opal different from Ethiopian opal?

Mainly by source. Many Ethiopian opals are hydrophane and can absorb water for a while, which Australian opal usually does not. Neither is better: choose by the play-of-colour, body tone, size and price of the stone itself.

Can this opal be set in jewellery?

Yes. At 14.20 x 11.00 x 4.20 mm it suits a pendant, ring or earrings; a bezel setting protects opal best. Give your jeweller the exact dimensions before setting.
