Detailed Product Description
This African Blue Sapphire (Neelam Stone) weighs 10.90 carat (11.98 ratti) and measures 13.30 x 11.30 x 6.20 mm, an oval mix cut with a deep blue body that shows its blue best under strong light, where the colour comes up through the facets. Like every Ratna Gems stone, it is tested by an independent gem laboratory before dispatch, and its lab report is included free.
Blue sapphire, known in India as Neelam (also spelt Nilam), is the blue variety of the mineral corundum, coloured by traces of iron and titanium. African Blue Sapphire refers to blue sapphire from an African source region; this stone's African origin is declared by Ratna Gems. Because synthetic sapphire and look-alikes can be very convincing, every Ratna Gems sapphire is identified by a laboratory, and its report travels with the stone.
Appearance
The studio photos and the video show a deep blue oval mix cut. Under strong light the facets bring up a richer blue, and in shade the colour deepens further. Blue sapphire ranges from greenish blue to violetish blue, and natural stones often show small inclusions and variations in shade; the close-up photos show this stone's own surface and inner features, and the video shows how its colour changes as it moves.
Traditional Use
In Vedic astrology, blue sapphire (Neelam) is traditionally associated with Saturn (Shani), and it is one of the nine gems of the Navratna. Customers choosing blue sapphire for astrological wear usually follow the guidance of their astrologer or Pandit ji. Blue sapphire is also the September birthstone.
Care
Corundum is very hard (9 on the Mohs scale) and tough, so a sapphire suits a ring or a pendant with normal care. Clean it with warm soapy water and a soft brush, then dry it with a soft cloth. Store it apart from diamonds and other hard stones, avoid harsh chemicals and sudden temperature changes, and tell your jeweller it is a sapphire before setting or resizing.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is this Neelam lab tested?
Yes. Every Ratna Gems stone is tested by an independent gem laboratory before it is dispatched, and the lab report comes with the stone free of charge. The report card is also added to this page.
Which planet is Neelam associated with?
Saturn (Shani). In Vedic astrology, Neelam is traditionally associated with this planet. This is a traditional belief, not a promise of any result, and customers usually follow their astrologer's or Pandit ji's guidance.
What is the difference between Bangkok and African Blue Sapphire?
In the gemstone trade, Bangkok blue sapphire generally refers to material that has undergone heating and lead-glass clarity enhancement to improve transparency. In contrast, African Blue Sapphire refers to sapphire mined from African deposits, and this piece is unheated and untreated natural corundum. Each product listing clearly specifies its origin and treatment.
Can this 10.90 carat Neelam be set in jewellery?
Yes. At 13.30 x 11.30 x 6.20 mm it suits a ring for men or women, or a pendant. Give your jeweller these exact measurements before setting.
