Iolite Stones (Neeli Stone)

Iolite is the gem-quality variety of the mineral Cordierite (a magnesium iron aluminum cyclosilicate). Its most celebrated optical hallmark is extreme pleochroism (trichroism):

• Three Optical Colors: Seen along its three main crystal directions, Iolite displays three distinct hues: deep sapphire violet-blue from one angle, watery pale blue from a second, and yellowish-grey to honey-brown from the third.
• Lapidary Precision: Because of this optical phenomenon, lapidary cutting requires exceptional skill. Master cutters must precisely orient the crystal so that the rich violet-blue axis faces directly up through the table facet; improper cutting causes the stone to appear dull grey or washed-out.

Every Iolite (Neeli) stone at Ratna Gems is individually tested and comes with a report from an independent gem testing laboratory. The certificate identifies the mineral species as Natural Cordierite, variety as Natural Iolite Stone, exact carat and ratti weight, dimensions, specific gravity (2.60–2.62), refractive index (1.542–1.551), hardness (7.0–7.5 on Mohs scale), and confirms untreated status. Each report carries its own report number, which you can quote to the laboratory to check it.

While Iolite shares a striking violet-blue color resemblance with Blue Sapphire, they are completely distinct minerals:

• Mineral Identity: Blue Sapphire is corundum (aluminum oxide, Mohs hardness 9), whereas Iolite is cordierite (magnesium aluminum silicate, Mohs hardness 7.0–7.5).
• Durability & Cleavage: With a hardness of 7–7.5, Iolite is durable enough for everyday ring and pendant wear (as hard as or slightly harder than quartz). However, Iolite possesses distinct cleavage along one plane, meaning it should be protected from sharp impacts against hard surfaces.
• Value: Iolite provides an authentic, Earth-mined natural blue gemstone at a substantially more accessible price per carat compared to fine unheated sapphire.
